FYF Fest is back this Labor Day Weekend with a new location and a slew of great bands. Previously held at the Los Angeles State Historic Park, this year the festival will happen in Downtown L.A. at 1st and Main, in the streets around City Hall. That should definitely cut down on the dust, and hopefully they figure out the lines and add more vendors.

As for performers, there are the heavy-hitters like Broken Social Scene, Explosions In The Sky, Descendents, Guided By Voices and Death From Above 1979, as well as No Age, Dan Deacon, Four Tet, Yacht, Pink Mountaintops, Twin Sister, among many others.

Tickets on sale for $35 at noon on Friday, June 17.

Big Black Delta

Jonathan Bates (Mellowdrone/M83 touring guitarist) has a new project called Big Black Delta, named after these. Though rooted in electronica ("snare tones are more important than guitar tones”), there is a lot of diversity to the music. And apparently there are dual drummers live (Mahsa Zargaran and Amy Wood). SSM faves The Republic Tigers have a free single from their upcoming EP No Man's Land. The EP will be available on Record Store Day in April, but you can head over to iTunes now to download "Merrymake It With Me." Part of the iTunes SXSW sampler, the track is a fresh batch of sonic goodness with the band's unmistakable blend of guitar, electronics, lyrics and pop. (Listen for the Zaireeka-esque intro.) If you happen to be heading to SXSW, the Tigers hit the Liberty Bar stage at 2:15 p.m. Friday, March 18. But they'll also be a part of the showcase hosted by their label, Chop Shop Records, later that night. They take to the stage at Maggie Mae's Rooftop at midnight (following a performance by Twin Shadow, no less).

SSM favorite A House For Lions has been gaining traction recently, and will be treating L.A. to (at least) two performances in the near future. The first show is on September 14, 2010 at The Viper Room. The second show is on October 4, 2010 at The El Rey, where they are performing as Jacknife Lee's hand-picked support for Tired Pony. The band will be recording an EP in the next month at Red Rockets Glare Studios with Raymond Richards (Local Natives, Parsons Red Heads, Ferraby Lionheart).

SSM Spotlight: The Caves and Nathan W. McKee

The Caves are a "post-indie" band from Kansas City that weave mellow semi-acoustic tunes about growth, decay, and deceit. Bassist/Producer/Engineer David Gaumé is an old friend of SSM. The band is rounded out by Andrew Ashby (Guitar, Voice), Elizabeth Bohannon (Keys, Percussion, Voice) and Jake Cardwell (Drums, Percussion). A highly recommended EP has just been completed. Head on over to their Myspace for some sample tracks. For KC-area listeners and internet seekers, you can catch them live on 96.5 on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 (about 9:00 a.m. CST).

"What did South Africa and South East Asia of the 1940s and 50s have in common? In both places the local population was trying to gain independence from British colonialism. Although colonialism is never a good thing, there are always some positive outcomes when two cultures collide, especially when it comes to music. The Zulu of South Africa are the largest ethnic group in the country and are well known for their rich musical traditions. In the 1940s, however, Zulu musicians began fusing traditional Zulu choral music (often sung by migrant mine workers), like Mbube and Isicathamiya, with the instruments and rhythms of Western jazz. A continent away in India, we see that the same kind of musical revolution was taking place during this same period. Calcutta in particular became a musical hotbed beginning in WWII, when it became one of the major ports for the South East Asian Theatre of the War. The jazz scene was dominated by house bands from the various luxury hotels and British social clubs, with these bands often recording for the South East Asian division of E.M.I. Interestingly, one of the hottest stars on this scene during the 1940s was Teddy Weatherford, an African American ‘expat’ from the Chicago jazz scene. Beginning in 1942, following the Japanese invasion of Burma (Myanmar), hundreds of thousands of refugees poured into India, among these great jazz musicians like Reuben Solomon (of Iraqi Jewish descent) of ‘The Rangoon Gymkhana Club’ fame. Batuk Nandy, on the other hand, was a well-known steel guitar player who rose to fame by making “filmi” music for Bollywood films, while Bismillah Khan was an Indian shehnai (a traditional flute-like instrument) master, and one of only three classical musicians to have ever won the Bharat Ratna prize, the highest civilian prize in India. Khan was also one of the few musicians to perform at Delhi's Red Fort in 1947 for India's Independence celebrations. Despite the obvious negative outcomes, different cultures and religions forced together in the face of economic and political adversity has historically been a recipe for great music, and as this album testifies, India and South Africa were no different."

Details are scarce, but SSM has learned that Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals is currently recording in Los Angeles for an upcoming release. So, what does the lead singer of arguably the best psychedelic fuzzed-out techno Welsh act do when he needs a female vocalist? He calls up Sarah Assbring of El Perro Del Mar and gets her in the studio for what is sure to be a loving duet by two talented songbirds. Or something.

Ms. Assbring is hot off the last night of a doubleheader tour with El Perro Del Mar and Taken By Trees. The bands are on Morning Becomes Eclectic today for the first ever joint MBE session, performing live at 11:15 a.m.

SSM editors and correspondents agree: BSS (as the act is referred to around these parts) are one of the supreme live acts out there and it will be incredible to see how new producer John McEntire's influence affects the show. Vibraphones, anyone?

Live Review: Broadcast [with Vincent Gallo] @ The Troubadour - 11/4/09

Experimental throwback pop duo Broadcast performed to a sold out crowd at The Troubadour last night. After a solid set by Bradford Cox's Atlas Sound (backed by The Selmanaires), Trish Keenan and James Cargill took the opposite ends of the stage, each manning a table spread with synths, samplers, ring modulators, analog delays and microphones, set between a large projection screen. The set commenced with about fifteen minutes of relatively free-form droning, interlaced with Keenan's echoed vocals and autumnal black and white visuals. Neither Keenan nor Cargill were lit at this point--instead, the focus was on the incredible projections, which Cargill watched intently as he tweaked his synth and samples.

Eventually, Broadcast performed several tracks in a more "traditional" manner with Cargill on bass or guitar and Keenan working center stage, backed by excellent sample-based beats. For as odd and haunting as some of Broadcast's music is, it was obvious they were enjoying themselves and the über-attentive crowd.

Warp Records labelmate Vincent Gallo joined on electric guitar for the main set closer, in addition to helming an acoustic duet encore with Keenan, during which she sang the lyrics from a set of handwritten notes.

This performance was certainly to be appreciated by true Broadcast fans. Here's hoping the act returns to the U.S. before another four years go by.

On November 9, 2009, SSM faves LCD Soundsystem will release their first music since 2007's excellent Sound of Silver. "Bye Bye Bayou" is a cover of a song from Suicide's Alan Vega's 1981 debut album. The track is purportedly "8+ minutes of classic LCD Soundsystem, deep soulful grooves that will appeal to fans and non-fans alike and will whet the appetite for fans dying for LCD's upcoming third album to be released in March 2010." Look for the track to be released via DFA Records on 12", complete with an a capella cut. Source.

Live Review: ?????? @ The Orpheum - 10/4/09

The Lady Doc and I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Thom Yorke perform on Sunday with his unnamed new band, billed by The Orpheum as "??????". Consisting of Nigel Godrich (keys, computers, guitar, backup vox), Flea (bass), Joey Waronker (drums) and Mauro Refosco (percussion), the band played to a sold-out crowd of 2,000 eager concertgoers.

Touted by Ticketmaster as a "ticketless" concert, we gained entrance after an employee swiped the original purchase card, and a tiny, waist-mounted printer spat out two non-tickets with our seat assignments. We entered the ornate lobby, passed the merch table (stocked only with copies of "Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses"), picked up a bottle of water, rubbed elbows with Cillian Murphy and Anne Hathaway, and made our way to our seats.

After a brief set from L.A.'s veteran experimentalists the Lucky Dragons, Yorke & Co. took the stage to a preemptive standing ovation. Yorke motioned for the crowd to sit, and the band launched into The Eraser in its entirety. For example:

The band blasted through rich, impassioned performances of every track from The Eraser. Yorke stated that they had been rehearsing for three weeks, and it really showed. Their chops were tight and polished, particularly the live percussive elements which easily surpassed the programmed beats on the album. Flea knew his place and precisely when to rock out, and when to exercise restraint. And, as always, Yorke's vocals were second to none. During main set closer "Cymbal Rush", I felt like he was channeling a fractured message from the future, by way of an alien satellite.

Yorke then performed three tracks solo, which felt like he was letting us in on demo versions of future Radiohead songs. The band returned for four more songs. And then, just like that, this truly special performance was over.

Assembly Line is a semi-instrumental hip-hop duo from Perth, Australia. Nathan-J and Luke Pierre have been crafting beats together for a few years now but have only recently delivered their first official release, The Assembly Line EP. The disc contains four tracks of instrumental hiphop "with two tracks being laced with live keys." Self-described as "Polish psych jumpoff" or "a downbeat cosmic carpet ride", this is a solid headnodder that showcases sampled hip-hop at its best. News: iTunes Now Offering "Digital 45s"

We here at SSM are big fans of 7" records and 45s. There's just something so satisfying about the physical embodiment of one or two brilliant tracks, memorialized in wax and color and often spun in the context of a spontaneous dance party. New and old releases contribute to a huge selection of unique artifacts, rarely more than $1 or $2 a disc.

So, it is with a tinge of nostalgia that we can report (via TUAW) that the iTunes Store is now offering "Digital 45s". The Digital 45s cost from $1.49 to $1.99 and include the original B-Sides. The first batch contains some heavy-hitters: The Human League's "Don't You Want Me Baby", Boston's "More Than A Feeling", Billy Idol's "White Wedding" and David Bowie's "Let's Dance", among others.

The concept is good for instant gratification and digital players, and it's definitely cheaper than buying two tracks separately. And kudos to iTunes for reaching back into the archives and not limiting the Digital 45s to The Black Eyed Peas and Taylor Swift. But wouldn't you rather own the real thing?

News: Dark Night of the Soul Streaming In Its Entirety From NPR

The release of Dark Night of the Soul, the intriguing collaboration between Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse, has been hung up by an unknown legal dispute with EMI. While the project is being self-released by Danger Mouse as a book-and-CD package featuring photos by David Lynch, the included CD is blank and recordable, ostensibly intended to hold Dark Night of the Soul tracks as found on torrent sites or other non-official sources.

Short of downloading something that may never actually see an official release, you can now head over to NPR for a stream of the entire album. The project features a variety of vocalists, with artists as diverse as Gruff Rhys, Suzanne Vega, Iggy Pop, Julian Casablancas, Frank Black and Nina Persson.

News: Super Furry Animals Announce Prototype "Festyval Wynd" Effects Pedal

In celebration of the release of their latest LP Dark Days, Light Years, prolific Welsh psych-pop-rockers Super Furry Animals have released a film documenting the making of their ninth studio album. The documentary touches on inspirations, the recording process, and the challenges attendant to capturing the "enormity" of the band's sound. The solution? A new technology in the form of an effects pedal dubbed "Festyval Wynd" that turns "your crystal clear studio sound into a shit muddy festival experience."

The pedal is intended to replicate the effect of various blends of wind, festival location and drugs. Frontman Gruff Rhys discusses some of the best and worst settings, which include "Natural Disaster", "Coachella", and "MDMA". News: Deltron 3030 To Release New Album In May???

In May 2000, hip hop supergroup Deltron 3030--the trio of Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Kid Koala, and Dan the Automator--released their eponymous rap opera concept album to near-critical acclaim. Now, nine years later, the group is poised to release its follow-up.

The beats and turntable work for Deltron Event II have reportedly been finished since 2007, leaving Del to lay down the lyrics. On April 12, 2009, at the Tuscon date of his "Funkman Tour", tha Funkee Homosapien himself announced that Deltron Event II is set to be released on May 24, 2009.

No word on what label will be releasing this much-awaited disc, although Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings is a usual suspect. And take this tip with a grain of salt--there has been no official confirmation yet. But wouldn't a new Deltron record make summer great?

Alert reader and regular SSM correspondent Kfuture has recently learned that the amazing Reactable is now available for retail consumption. Kfuture, DJ KRC and I first encountered this mindblowing modular synth at Björk's 2007 Coachella performance.

We were unsure if what we were seeing was real, and research confirmed that the Reactable is in fact a project from the Music Technology Group at Spain's Pompeu Fabra University. The Reactable Experience is now available and is aimed at museums and public entities. Now if only an eccentric, rich musician like Trent Reznor could get his hands on this puppy...

2006's Back to Basics was a very retro-sounding affair. And it seems like she has a killer strategy for the follow-up!

Aguilera has confirmed that she has been working with Australian singer (and Perez fave) Sia since January. It has also been confirmed that Christina has been speaking with electropop group Ladytron regarding a collaboration.

Another collab rumor floating around has been one with Goldfrapp, although nothing has been confirmed yet.

If it's true, this sounds like it's going to be an amazing album! And, of course, she is once again collaborating with Beautiful co-writer Linda Perry.

When I first moved to Southern California, my only source of music in the home was my FM radio. On my first night I ran the dial and immediately came across a track from Bloc Party's Silent Alarm, who were just getting established in the United States. "Banquet" was followed by some Ramones and Arcade Fire's "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)", and I was hooked on the station.

Over the next four years, 103.1 was my 24 hour go-to music source. Tons of new stuff, great old stuff ("God! Show Me Magic"), new old stuff, and great shows and programs. Although some found it to be the "Diet Coke" of independent radio, Indie was hands down a consistent source of choice quality music. That's all I really ask for in a radio station.

Now KDLD's terrestrial broadcast is no more, and the station is transitioning to some sort of web-based format. It sounds like the shows are gone, and there's no word if Big Sonic Heaven, Passport Approved, Head Trip or any of the other awesome programs will show up on other stations. KCRW? Perhaps. Raise KXLU's HATT by 80 meters? I don't know. I just pray that the online Indie will have a moblie app like Soma FM so I can at least pretend it's a real radio station.

Yuck.

According to The Press Association:

"An exclusive remix of Radiohead's song Videotape, released on a single VHS signed by the band, is to go on sale at an online charity auction.

The four-hour remix video will raise funds for Missing People, the UK's leading charity for missing and unidentified people.

It was recorded by James Rutledge, who has produced and remixed for Bloc Party and The Kills. He was recently included in the NME Future 50 list as one of the "bands, artists and innovators driving music forward".

His friend and former Dakota Oak band mate, Dave Tyack, went missing in Corsica in August 2002. The charity was in constant contact with the Tyack family until his body was found in June 2004.

Rutledge said: "The charity gave his family continued support during that incredibly difficult time, as they do for thousands of others each year.

"The service that the charity provides is vital to those left wondering what has happened to their loved ones. It is hard to imagine what it is like to have no idea where someone you love is, whether they are alive or dead even. At times like this the charity can be a lifeline."

Paul Tuohy of Missing People said: "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of signed Radiohead memorabilia and let's face it, it's the ultimate Christmas present for a Radiohead fan."

The original version of Videotape is on Radiohead's most recent album In Rainbows.

I associate Wilderness' 2005 self-titled debut with the worst summer of my life. The record was released on July 5 -- over a month into my grueling studies for the California Bar Exam. With over three weeks until the most important three days of my life, Wilderness provided with me an escape, a release, a, well, wilderness. I'd let the driving percussion, ringing guitar, and James Johnson's guttural vocals wash over me and remind me that life existed outside of the library.

In the three years since then, Wilderness have released two more LPs: 2006's Vessel States and last month's (k)no(w)here. The band have stuck to their guns and offered more of the derived yet distinct grooves found on their debut.

Live Review: M83/School of Seven Bells

M83 absolutely killed it last Saturday at the Henry Fonda. Lead by Cocteau Twins lover Anthony Gonzalez, the live version of the French electro high definition rockers (including guitarist Pierre-Marie Maulini, drummer extraordinaire Loic Maurin, and LA's own Morgan Kibby on keys and vox) performed a dynamic, heartfelt and overwhelming set. Every song resonated to the human core with a clarity and sheer intensity not heard in most live performances. From a technical standpoint, the mix was impeccable and LOUD!

Evening Empire are a four-piece act from San Francisco that create independent rock. And rock they do. Combining the diversity of Tapes 'n Tapes, the urgency of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and the synthiness of Wolf Parade, Evening Empire have put together a sound that is catchy, rockin' and no doubt kicks ass live.

As of now, Evening Empire have but two dates scheduled in the City by the Bay. (Apparently one of the members has been in Europe). Hopefully they'll soon pick up some speed and perform outside of their hometown. Until then, visit their site to download their new EP Build The Myth Backwards. Highly recommended, infectious stuff.

New Music: Nathan McKee - "Cookie Breath"

Not sure how many SSM readers caught the finale for Project Runway Season 5, but if you did, there's a good chance you're wondering about the awesome track that anchored winner Leanne Marshall's final collection runway show. The song is called "Cookie Breath" and it was composed and performed by Nathan McKee, Marshall's boyfriend, who may go by the stage name "William Holley".

Employing "guitars, clarinet, voice and magic", it is a track that beautifully layers organic and looped sound elements, traversing its way through an experimental wonderland. It's unclear what else McKee has in his bag of tricks, but he apparently made a "folk-pop" album last year that will be available online soon, so keep an eye out for that.

Listen to an edit of "Cookie Breath" on McKee's MySpace or do the guy a favor and plunk down $1.20 for the full-length mp3. C'mon, the economy's not that bad!

News: The Republic Tigers Detained In London, U.K. Tour Continues

Well well. The Republic Tigers score themselves their first tour on the other side of the pond, and how do they kick it off? By getting locked down for 24 hours by London-Gatwick Airport Immigration Officers.

Apparently some SNAFU with their work visas put TRT into a tight spot that threatened them with imminent deportation back to the U.S. However, an 11th hour saving grace ensured that these guys will get to show Scotland and England what they've got in store.

As much as one tries to keep up with all things musical, it's an impossible task. Case in point: "Us Placers" by Child Rebel Soldier. CRS is a group consisting of Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco and Pharrell Williams. "Us Placers" is the group's first single, and it first appeared on West's mixtape, Can't Tell Me Nothing way back in May 2007. The track features a generous sample from Thom Yorke's excellent track "The Eraser". It's great to see that Yorke's stuff is getting sampled -- and it's not surprising that these are the guys who plucked it from his solo LP. Keep an eye out for a CRS full-length, hopefully before the year's over.

James Murphy and Pat Mahoney -- 2/5ths of the touring version of LCD Soundsystem -- will be flexing their DJ muscles at The Roosevelt Hotel on Sunday, August 10. The daytime performance has been dubbed "Special Disco Version" and will happen poolside at the hotel's Tropicana Bar. Expect something along the lines of Murphy and Mahoney's FABRICLIVE 36, "a hot sweaty blend of seminal disco, deep rare grooves and edgy tech-infused funk." There will also be DJ sets by Jason Bentley and Destructo.

This should be an awesome event, but be forewarned: "Please don't ask us to play any lcd if we dj near you. (awkward!)"

Article: "Does the world need another indie band?"

I occasionally watch a decent HD show called "London Live" which showcases established and upcoming musical acts. The lineup is usually hit or miss, with musicians like Beck and Lupe Fiasco sharing a bill with -- ahem -- Razorlight. Although Justice, Phoenix, The Rapture, Guillemots, Feist, Manic Street Preachers, Kanye West, and Lightspeed Champion have all graced the London Live stage, there are simply too many appearances from seriously mediocre British bands. Case in point: chart-topping, platinum-selling "pop" band Scouting For Girls.

The Independent recently published an article addressing the state of "indie" music that allows a band like Scouting For Girls to thrive. Among the topics discussed in the article are: what qualifies as "indie", the history and evolution of "indie" music, and the incredibly effective hype machines that propel shite like Scouting For Girls into the minds of unassuming listeners.

Although the article is predicated on an overly narrow definition of "indie", it makes some great points. A timeline from the piece:

How indie ate itself

1977: The Buzzcocks release their Spiral Scratch EP on their DIY label, New Hormones. Pop historians will refer to it as the first indie record

1986: NME and Rough Trade compile and release C86, the cassette (featuring, among others, Primal Scream, The Soup Dragons and Half Man Half Biscuit) that defines the indie genre

1987: The Smiths leave independent label Rough Trade after four albums and sign a more lucrative deal with EMI, then split acrimoniously before they record a note

1990: The Stone Roses, led by singer Ian Brown stage a Woodstock for the baggys generation – a huge gig at Spike Island in Widnes. Among the 27,000 fans is a young Noel Gallagher

1992: Alan McGee sells half of Creation Records to Sony for £2.5m. Later, Nude is sold to Sony, Factory to London Records, Go!Discs to Phonogram and Food to EMI

1993: Indie fans Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley take over Radio One's high-profile Evening Session slot and make it their own. Blur release their second album, Modern Life is Rubbish. According to John Harris, the author of The Last Party: Britpop, Blair and the Demise of British Rock, this is the first true Britpop album. Alan McGee goes to Glasgow venue King Tut's Wah Wah Hut to see his label's act 18 Wheeler play, and discovers a little band called Oasis

1995: Blur and Oasis release singles in the same week ("Country House" and "Roll With It") in what NME bills as a "British heavyweight championship". Blur win the immediate battle to reach number one, but Oasis win the war: their album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, sells 18m copies worldwide

1997: Oasis's third album, Be Here Now, is bloated and ugly. Blur by Blur sounds American. Britpop dies a belated death

2001: New York hipsters The Strokes release Is This It. Everyone forgets about Britain

2002: The Libertines release their debut, Up The Bracket. Shambling guitars become chic again

2004: Snow Patrol's Final Straw and Keane's Hopes and Fears top the album charts. Indie reaches a low point

2006: Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not becomes the fastest-selling debut album in chart history. The major labels snap up every 17-year-old guikookstar player in the land

2008: Scouting For Girls' debut album reaches Number One. Indie eats itself

All I can say is: thank the heavens for freedom of choice. I'll never understand the U.K. charts and the continual chart-topping trash that has no place in critical circles, let alone on the soundtrack to Notting Hill.

The Republic Tigers commence their latest tour tonight, beginning with a show in The Flaming Lips' hometown of Norman, OK. This jaunt will take TRT across the western portion of the country, hitting all the key cities on the Left Coast. For you locals, check out the Spaceland date on Friday, July 25.
